MUSIC FREAK - THE WEEKND "THE HIGHLIGHTS" (review)

When The Weeknd's greatest hits set entitled "The Highlights" came out I didn't even have a moment's hesitation about wanting to own this CD. Not only because there has been nothing better than The Weeknd in R&B music for many years, but also because, in my personal opinion, The Weeknd is simply the musical reincarnation of Michael Jackson!

There are 18 hits on the album. And it is really in the literal sense of the word. "Blinding Lights" is familiar to anyone with hearing ability. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of 2020! "Starboy" is a brilliant composition recorded by The Weeknd with Daft Punk. "Pray for me" has a brilliant theme and was recognized by the whole world with the release of the music for the movie "Black Panther".

The next two brilliant tracks are, for me, wonderfully inspired by Michael Jackson. "In Your Eyes" is as close vocally, melodically and lyrically to Michael Jackson as you can get! I must secretly tell you that when I first heard this song a few years ago, I thought someone had brilliantly mixed some lost King of Pop track! The second track is "I feel it coming" where The Weeknd could "add" this song to Michael's "Thriller" album and everyone would applaud the idea. Of course, I'm kidding, but this is as divine a track as it is possible to come close to feeling the tenderness in Jackson's music.

You shouldn't also forget the new single "Save Your Tears" promoting the album. A modern hit with a rocking rhythm and ear-pleasing lyrics. Also the chorus has a nice break in the rhythm and phrasing of the title lyrics. It should be added here that the remaining 11 songs are also quite enjoyable. "Heartless" or "Love me harder" may be lesser known, but they are worth listening to.

Anyway, the whole tracklisting of "The Highlights" is very successful. You can see that The Weeknd has already recorded a lot of great music and his "the best of" is no coincidence.

FINAL SCORE: 8/10
